Overview
The Farwest
Corrosion Marine Growth Prevention System (MGPS)
prevents marine growth from accumulating. It is
ideal for use in marine seawater cooling systems to
keep the piping clear of biofouling.
Marine growth
results from the settlement of larvae and subsequent
marine life forms, in particular hard shells such
as acorn barnacles and gooseneck barnacles. In
extreme cases, marine growth fouling can become so
serious as to completely obstruct the flow of
seawater through cooling piping. Lesser cooling
system complications include overheating, reduced
efficiency, increased corrosion, and loss of vessel
speed -- a serious situation since most vessels
demand maximum speed.
The MGPS Marine
Growth Prevention System is electrolytic in
action. Copper, aluminum or iron anodes are
typically installed in vessel sea chests. These
anodes are powered by a low voltage DC power supply,
which provides a source of regulated DC current to
the anodes. The resulting release of copper ions
from the copper anodes is sufficient to deter the
settlement of larvae within the piping. This release
of copper ions is extremely small and is measured in
micrograms per liter of seawater.

Advantages
- Simple
Installation
- Automatic
operation
- Minimum required
supervision
- Complete
protection against fouling
- Reduced corrosion
- Minimal power
requirements
- Easily adapted to
specific vessels:
1. Quantity of seawater to be treated (flow
rate) measured in cubic meters per hour.
2. Required life of the anodes. This is
usually determined by dry docking intervals for sea
chest mounted anodes.
3. Type of materials used in the sea water
piping system.

Anode Sizes & Types
Anode diameter and
length determine the DC current output of the anodes
and ultimate life span of the MGPS system. The
tables below show standard anode meterials, diameters
and lengths. Custom lengths can easily be supplied.
