WaveTrue, Inc. was incorporated in 1986 and commenced operations in fiscal year 1988. The Company is in the business of inspecting pipelines for corrosion and other anomalies that require inspection to verify pipeline integrity. WaveTrue has developed a patented, non-destructive and non-invasive, long range inspection process, using electromagnetic waves to remotely inspect buried, cased and insulated pipelines for corrosion. WaveTrue’s services are available to owners and operators of natural gas and oil pipelines, power plants and refineries, utilities, and most any facility with cased or insulated pipe.
The EMW-C™ Inspection System is a pipeline inspection method that does not require the inspector to physically remove the pipeline’s casing or lagging or otherwise dig up the pipeline to visually inspect for corrosion and anomalies. The EMW-C™ Inspection System permits the inspection of pipelines with a minimal amount of disturbance to the coating or insulation on the pipeline. In addition, the EMW-C™ permits inspection over the entire pipeline, as opposed to other inspection methods, which only provide for spot point inspections. The Company has developed hardware and software to permit the testing of cased pipe from a single location while, at the same time, capturing data from the pipe traveling in both directions.
Beyond cased pipelines, WaveTrue continues its research to modify this technique to inspect for pipeline internal corrosion and to inspect directly buried pipelines well. WaveTrue’s research facility is located in Albuquerque, NM.
Support & Training for Our Products
Located in beautiful and historic Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Technology Center is configured to provide excellent research and development facilities to WaveTrue’s doctoral staff while also serving as a training and field support facility. Here, field engineers work directly with the physicists who develop and refine the technologies to ensure that all testing and reporting services are performed to the exacting standards established by WaveTrue.
Visitors to the Technology Center receive technology presentations that include demonstrations on test pipe stands that exhibit the capabilities of this powerful technology.
All field staff begin their training at the Technology Center (TC) and then continue with field instruction and TC training courses throughout their career with WaveTrue.
This program creates and promulgates an open line of communication between the technology development staff and the field engineering staff, thus maintaining the highest technical standards while providing the necessary real-world feedback to move the technology forward.
Pipeline Inspection Technologies
Using technology similar to RADAR, WaveTrue has created a unique non-invasive, long-range inspection method to locate and identify anomalies and unfavorable conditions of cased and insulated pipelines. Just as a RADAR system emits electromagnetic signals and waits for a response reflected from objects, our equipment sends pulsed waves into the space surrounding a pipeline and receives the responses which can then be located and identified.
The pulses travel as waves lengthwise through the space that is bordered by the outside surface of the pipeline being tested, and the inside surface of the casing or insulating jacket. The inner and outer pipe serve as a guide for the waves as they travel through the annular space between the pipes. Variations in material densities and distortions in the shape of the annulus result in changes to the reflected signal that can then be analyzed to determine cause and location.
In this manner, we can provide :
- Long range detection of anomalies in the annular space of a cased pipeline including corrosion product, electrolytes (water, soil), and electrical or electrolytic contact.
- Detection of water and short circuits.
- Identification of external corrosion and wall loss above a Minimum Detection Threshold (MDT).
- Mechanical deformation detection such as sagging of the carrier pipe or crushing of the casing.
- Resolution of the location and length of a single or multiple anomalies.
- Characterization of the magnitude of the anomaly based on data and equivalancy models.
- Continuous or periodic monitoring to detect changes over time.
Pipeline Inspection Services
WaveTrue provides pipeline inspection services for cased and thermally insulated metallic pipelines using the EMW-C™ Inspection Service. The technology requires that the pipe to be inspected runs inside a secondary pipe or metallic sheath. Our specially trained technicians can quickly attach the test equipment to the section to be tested and provide preliminary results within minutes thereafter.
Pipe sizes from 1/8 inch in diameter up through and including 36 inches can be tested for distances up to 150 meters in length depending on material types inside the casing or sheath. Longer pipelines can be tested by leapfrogging to the end point of the previous test. Testing of larger diameter pipelines can be performed upon request.
We require temporary and minimal access to the pipe and casing at the casing end point. For long length insulated pipe, access is dependent on the length of the previous test shot. In all situations, our test equipment requires minimal contact to the pipe surface and casing with point tip probes which may be removed after testing or may be permanently installed for reassessment or periodic monitoring.
Our EMW-C™ Inspection Service is available to pipeline owners / operators of oil and natrual gas transmission or distribution pipelines, power plants, utilities, refineries, chemical plants, process piping, or any location requiring inspection of pipe-in-pipe.

- Identify water or other problems in the casing before filling.
- Monitor the fill process in real-time and identify voids or other potential problems.
- Report the fill volume during and after the fill.
- Monitor for changes inside the casing and report fill volume for the life of the casing.
Real-Time Monitoring and %Volume Measurement During Fill
With EMW-C™ the casing is monitored in real-time to provide graphical feedback on the progress of the fill. As the wax enters the casing, our technicians will monitor the progress and identify potential problems such as air voids or wax blockages. Our software automatically updates throughout the fill and provides a real-time independent measurement of the %Volume of wax inside the casing.
Long Term Monitoring from a Test Station
With low cost permanent connectors, the casing can be monitored aboveground for the life of the pipeline without the need for further excavations. Monitoring provides a means to compare current conditions to the baseline condition when the casing was filled to identify changes in wax levels, water incursion, air voids, corrosion growth, and shorts or electrolytic couples.
New Regulatory Guidelines for Casing Monitoring
Recent natural gas pipeline integrity Guidelines published by the US Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) provide suggestions for the preparation, filling, and monitoring of wax fill inside pipeline casings.
About Our Industry
Cased pipeline inspection in the United States is regulated by the US Department of Transportation’s Pipeline Safety and Hazardous Materials Administration (PHMSA) for interstate pipelines and individual state regulators for intrastate pipelines. There are an estimated 10,000 natural gas distribution cased crossings in the United States requiring inspection under PHMSA regulations. In addition to these casings, there are countless more natural gas transmission and hazardous liquids casing that have already been filled previously and are now able to be retrofitted with the WaveTrue EMW-C™ monitoring system.
