SUMMARY:    Test, inspect, design, maintain, operate and survey a variety of cathodic protection systems to provide corrosion protection of submerged steel structures, such as pipelines, storage tanks and similar, from corrosion in conformance with the required codes and industry standards.  Must be able to generate Cathodic Protection system drawings and specifications.

 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. To perform this job successfully, the Corrosion Engineer may be expected to perform some or all of the duties listed, and other duties as assigned.


 
Primary Responsibilities

  • Comply with DOT and OSHA health, safety and environmental requirements and follow safety philosophy and procedures developed by the Company including applicable environmental, health and safety rules, procedures, and accepted safe work practices, the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems, and the reporting of workplace hazards and injury or illness arising from workplace activities.  In addition, must observe the workplace to identify conditions or behaviors that should be corrected and then takes appropriate action.

  • Conducts or coordinates corrosion control surveys, interference tests, and cathodic protection failure investigations.  Evaluates the results to identify potential issues and makes recommendations to correct any identified deficiencies, hence improving the clients cathodic protection systems and techniques.

  • Performs or coordinates maintenance activities on clients cathodic protection systems by energizing, testing, adjusting, and troubleshooting the equipment.

  • Evaluates the reliability, usefulness, and cost of new corrosion control equipment and makes recommendations for new corrosion control systems or revisions to existing facilities.

  • Prepares reports recommending changes in the clients current cathodic protection standards, procedures, practices, and Corrosion Manual based on data analysis and industry findings.

  • Designs Cathodic Protection (CP) mitigation systems for both new and existing systems by preparing engineering drawings of CP equipment including rectifiers, anode beds, cabling, test stations, etc.  Must monitor the continued services to support the client’s corrosion control program including installation of test leads, installation or repair of rectifiers, and the installation of ground beds and magnesium anodes.

  • Prepares RFP’s, contracts, and work orders to obtain external cathodic protection services, materials, and equipment.  Prepares bid packets for corrosion control projects and evaluates the quality of the proposals, and prepares contracts for the projects.

  • Monitors the function’s annual budget; prepares reports on financial activity and variances of actual expenses from the budget; verifies and approves time sheets, expense reports, and invoices relating to the projects for payment; monitors the costs and schedule of cathodic protection projects and takes corrective actions to ensure that projects are completed on schedule and under budget.

  • Supervises personnel during the installation and testing of cathodic protection systems.

  • Ability to actively engage in safe behavior and understand and follow the principles and methods related to pipeline and workplace safety as established by the Company and its clients.

  • Knowledge of emergency and safety procedures, policies procedures, equipment operating parameters, and all applicable DOT, EPA, FERC, DHS and OSHA requirements.

  • Identifies, formulates and implements “On‐the‐Job” training programs for the workforce under responsibility.
  • Complies with all statutory requirements connected with the implementation of the project.
  • Oversight of Company personnel depending on the project.

Knowledge 

  • Knowledge of emergency and safety procedures, policies procedures, equipment operating parameters, and all applicable DOT, EPA, FERC, DHS and OSHA requirements and following various pipeline procedures.
  • Understanding of basic electrical systems.
  • Understanding of basic mechanical principles.

  • Skills are required to operate a variety of CP equipment including, but not limited to, multimeters, line locators, insulator testers, soil resistivity meters, current interrupters, data loggers, and other field instruments related to the corrosion control industry.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • The position requires frequent lifting, walking, carrying, stooping, kneeling and crouching during the inspection of cathodic protection systems on a variety of industrial structures such as pipeline installations, storage tanks, marine facilities, power generation equipment, oilfield process equipment and more.
  • The duties of this position are primarily performed in an outdoor setting with frequent exposure to weather, insects, animals, etc.
  • Able to travel as required for the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Science or related technical discipline or equivalent.
  • 5-8 Years of related professional experience.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS 

  • PE or EIT preferred
  • NACE CP-2 Certification
