Expert Tip: Coating Application & Dew Point
Protect Coating Performance with a Dew Point Check
When applying protective coatings, temperature and humidity matter - especially when the substrate temperature is too close to the dew point. Condensation can form (even when the surface looks dry), and that’s where adhesion issues and premature failures begin.
Key Takeaways:
Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated and moisture can condense onto a surface.
If you coat too close to the dew point, you risk blistering, peeling, cracking and rework.
Rule of thumb: Don’t spray unless the substrate is at least 5°F above the dew point - and maintain that during cure.
